The trip starts with an optional buffet dinner 7 PM Harrah's Casino in Laughlin on Friday night, April 2nd, if you get there in time. Be there at 7 PM. Otherwise, roll into camp whenever you get there. We will hit the road at 8 AM Saturday morning. We will cover 134 miles of dirt roads in two days. This is not a trip for tow vehicles.
There will be a campsite marked near the river road between Needles and Laughlin where we will stay Friday night. See the directions below,
Along the way on Saturday I plan to visit the abandoned Army fort and spring, Fort Piute. There will be a short side trip to the petroglyph area just off the Mojave Road in Lanfair Valley. We'll put pennies in the Penny Can and see Government Hole.
Saturday night we will probably camp at Hole-In-The Wall group campground. Reservations pending.
Sunday we go to Marl Springs coral and gold mine. This is where we saw a tortoise last trip and wild burros the trip before that. We'll stop to see the famous Mojave Toads and drop a letter off at the mail box, followed by a short side trip to the lava tubes. Don't forget a flashlight for the lava tubes. Don't forget your rock for the rock pile in the dry lake bed near Zyzyx. From there we cross the sand dunes to the Majove river channel/canyon and take a couple of dips in the river at the end of the trip. Other than that, it will be the usual sort of trip. You will hit pavement again Sunday afternoon near Yermo on I-15.
Rendezvous @ Harrah's buffett
Drive about 6 hours and 286 miles from San Clemente to camp.
Go to Barstow and take I-40 East to almost Arizona. Take the W Park Road off ramp (Northeast)). Go about 3/4 mile and turn left on River Road (North). River Road becomes Needles Highway after about 3 or 4 miles. No turn, just a name change. 10.2 miles from the turn onto River Road is the turn West off pavement. It is about a mile into Nevada at:
N 35.05205, W 114.67623
I will mark the turn with the club sign and yellow plastic tape. Drive west up the wash to camp. Follow the signs and yellow tape.
Gasoline: Either go into Needles or Laughlin and fill up. I plan to fill up after dinner in Laughlin on my way back to camp. If you pick Needles you'll want to take the River Road out of Needles rather than the freeway as there is no W Park Road off ramp for West bound traffic.
