Superstition Mountain

November 9th 2012

Description

Update 11/2:  Guest viewable.  Guests please contact me prior to the run so I know who is attending the run.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time to head out to Superstition Mountain again!  The difficulty of the run will be dictated by the vehicles that show up.  However I cannot play on fire roads and sand all day so there will be rocks.  Jeeps have made it through these trails with no lift, 31" tires and a lot of great driving with some tow strap magic as well.  Stock vehicles are not recommended but we will find a way to get you through.  Expect lots of under carriage love if you are stock.

Trails can be very tight depending on what has happened with the weather and jeeps.  I personally have not been there in well over a year (maybe two) so things could have changed.  I know there are some new trails out there and I would like to find them if possible.  They are on the more difficult side.

No facilities out there but you can get your RV there and trailer if needed.  2WD to get to camp.  Place is OHV friendly so if you have something you want to bring you are welcome to but remember we will be out in jeeps most of the day.

Friday night if we feel up to it I'll do a "short" night run.  Lets plan on heading out at 8pm.  Please let me know if you are planning on attending the night run so we don't leave without you.

Saturday:  We will head at 9am and spend the majority of the day out.  Bring lunch in the jeep.

Saturday Night: No plan for a night run but who knows.  Nothing really close to get food at so bring some dinner.  If you have firewood you would like to share bring that too.

Sunday: If we haven't had enough maybe we will do a quick run in the morning.  I'll try to have us back at camp by 1pm.

There are pictures on the website as well as videos on the web.  Here or some of our trips on YouTube

Location

Rendezvous @ Trailhead/Campsite

There are many ways to get there.  Here is the way I would leave from Orange County.

Head South on I-5

East on Hwy 76 through Oceanside and pass I-15

Turn left onto Hwy 79 just past Lake Henshaw

Turn right onto S-2 just past the power station

Turn left on Hwy 78

Go past Ocotillo Wells all the way to 86/78

Turn right and head south on 86/78 towards Westmorland

Turn right at the stop sign on Forrester Rd

Turn right onto Imler Rd.  Keep an eye out for this one.  It's easily missed.  Google looks like 5-6mi

Follow the road as it turns and then turn right into dirt at Wheeler Rd

Follow that out for I guess 7-10mi.  The road will start to head right and into the mountain.  Don't go over the mountain.

You can go throgh Julian if you like or even over the 8 freeway.  I tow and I like this route the best.  Less windy than Julian and not such a long grade as the 8

Remember,  google is your friend
