Cerro Gordo and the Saline Valley Salt Tram are located in the Inyo Mountains, above the Owens Valley Dry Lake Bed, just east of Mount Whitney near Lone Pine.
Saturday night we will be camping along the trail at an elevation around 8500 feet near the crossover station of the Salt Tram. The tram is 13.5 miles long and starts in the Saline Valley and traverses up and over the Inyo Mountains and down to the Owens Valley. Our campsite will have breath taking views of Mount Whitney and the Owens Valley to the west and Saline Valley to the east. The campsite can get windy at night so bring some warm clothes. We can have a campfire but NO BARN FIRES. The Salt Tram is a National Registered Historic landmark so please DO NOT TAKE ANY SOUVIERS.
Sunday we will go north following the ridge lines of the Inyo mountains to the Burgess mine site and then dropping down to the Owens Valley at the old town site of Swansea which is located a couple of miles north of Keeler. We should be back on the pavement around 3 PM Sunday.
This is an easy to moderate trail with a few steep grades and two sections of the trail being a shelf road with steep drop offs.
Sunday afternoon I will be continueing on for another 3 to 4 days camping out along the trail. If anyone has the time and would like to join me you are welcome. See the trek Beyond Cerro Gordo 6/8/14
