Black (Inscription Canyon) has the highest concentration of petroglyphs in the Black Mountain Rock Art District. They number more than 1,000 and contain drawings of circles, rays, zigzag, wavy lines and other figures. One of the more common is a circle with a line drawn through it from top to bottom. Some petroglyphs contain images of bighorn sheep, deer, reptiles, birds, insects, plants and trees. Others represent stick and solid body images of humanlike figures along with various baskets, masks, shields and "hand-shape" designs.
As an added attraction, there are names and dates hammered onto the rocks from the last 100 years when Black Canyon is first entered. This trip will also take in Rainbow Basin and Tonka town.
Make you way to Barstow and meet at the TA Travel Center on Lenwood Rd West of the freeway at 10 AM. There's a Subway there is you want to get something for lunch but be gased up and ready to go at 10 AM.
